CHINA'S LEADER TO VISIT SOUTH AFRICA

Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to embark on a state visit to South Africa next week, during which he will also participate in the BRICS summit. This multinational gathering comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and is often considered an alternative to the G7 alliance of developed nations.

President Xi's forthcoming journey marks his second international trip this year, following his official state visit to Russia in March. The timing aligns with the upcoming meeting of BRICS leaders, where discussions will encompass the potential expansion of the group's membership. Several African nations, including Algeria, Egypt, and Ethiopia, have previously expressed their aspirations to join this bloc.

Initial uncertainty surrounded the participation of Russia's president in the summit. However, South Africa's presidency later confirmed that he would not attend. This decision was influenced by the fact that had President Putin left Russian territory, he could have been susceptible to an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant due to his country's involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. Notably, South Africa is a signatory of the ICC and thus legally obligated to cooperate in the apprehension of individuals sought by the court.
