HEARTS OF OAKS NEW COACH
The Dutch coach, who previously led the Maldives national team from 2019 to 2021, has joined Hearts just in time for the start of the 2023/24 season.
Koopman was introduced to the team on Thursday ahead of their pre-season friendly against Miracle Land Football Club, a lower-tier side. Hearts had been without a permanent coach since parting ways with Serbian manager Slavko Matic due to a series of poor results and a falling out with supporters last season.
During Matic's final days in charge, angry fans even stormed the team's training ground at Pobiman, with some resorting to physical assaults. Following Matic's departure, assistant coach David Ocloo took over as interim manager until the end of the season.
Koopman brings experience from managing on the continent, as he had previously coached AS Vita Club. Meanwhile, Hearts has plans to construct a 25,000-capacity stadium. The club's Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, revealed that the stadium project will begin once the ultramodern Pobiman training complex is completed.
Togbe Afede XIV explained that having a stadium with a minimum capacity of 25,000 is a requirement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for participation in the upcoming African Super League. He mentioned that the club is already searching for suitable land for the stadium.
"After completing the Pobiman project, the only missing piece is a large stadium," Togbe Afede XIV stated, as quoted by Joy Sports. "We're aiming for a 25,000-capacity stadium. The board, known for its vision and future-oriented approach, is already in the process of finding land for this stadium. We're meeting all the criteria, but it's not a simple task."
After finishing in the 12th position last season, Hearts aims to make improvements under Koopman's leadership.
